Bethany checking hummingbird data at the computer Bethany Williams training the new research students to collect hummingbird songs, Fall 2007. Bethany is completing her master's research on song in male Costa's hummingbird. She has given a couple of conference presentations and submitted two papers in her time at CSUF. She is also working with Anne on some pedagogy assessment projects, and has contributed to the new Bio 101L lab curriculum.

Laura is completing her master's research on song in male Anna's hummingbirds, the basis of much of the research in the lab. She has presented her results at local and national Animal Behavior Society meetings.

Megan doing Costa's Hummingbird Observations Megan Anduri observing a Costa's Hummingbird at Anza Borrego during the Spring 2007 field season. Megan is completing her master's degree in environmental studies at CSUF. Her thesis research is on daily time budgets of male Anna's and Costa's hummingbirds during the breeding season. She is also working with Anne on some pedagogy assessment projects, and has contributed to the new Bio 101L lab curriculum.

Sarah English and Jaimee Grimes take a look at the new Marantz recorder. Jaimee is the newest graduate student in the Houtman lab, and will be working on the role of visual and vocal displays in territorial defense of Costa's hummingbird.

Sarah English preparing the equipment to record an Anna's Hummingbird in Anza Borrego in the Spring 2007 field season. Sarah is a SCERP scholar (Southern California Ecosystem Research Program, funded through National Science Foundation). She is conducting her undergraduate thesis research on the effect of human-generated noise on the song of Anna's and Costa's hummingbirds. Sarah has presented her research at two meetings: California Academy of Sciences and SACNAS.

Cory Castro observing a juvenile Anna's hummingbird, Fall 2007. Cory has presented her research at two conferences, and won Best Undergraduate Ecology Poster at SACNAS! Cory is a SCERP scholar (Southern California Ecosystem Research Program, funded through National Science Foundation). She is conducting her undergraduate thesis research on neighbor-stranger recognition in Anna's hummingbird, working closely with Bethany Williams who is conducting sister experiments with Costa's hummingbird.

Uyen Tran collecting data during her first field season, Spring 2007. Uyen will be continuing her research on Anna's hummingbird as a graduate student beginning Spring 2008, looking at the role of visual and vocal displays in Anna's territorial defense, a sister project to Jaimee Grimes' study of Costa's hummingbird.

Tanya Samra recording her first of many Anna's hummingbird songs, Fall 2007. Tanya will be conducting field experiments following up on Sarah English's study of the effect of human-generated noise on Anna's hummingbird song.

Krista Krista Brown recording song from a non-breeding Anna's hummingbird male. Krista will be conducting research on year-round territorial and song behavior in Anna's hummingbird, following up on Megan Anduri's research.

Stephanie Craig (in back) conducting fieldwork at Anza Borrego in Spring 2006, with Bethany Williams. Stephanie has submitted a paper on juvenile song in Anna's hummingbird based on this fieldwork. She received her bachelor's degree in Fall 2006.
